Fitness proving to be a important factor in success
The Blues maintained their quest for the Championship with a clinical victory over Fleet Town Whites. The pre-match rumour was that the game had been moved to a 1:30pm kick off in order to accommodate the Sky TV cameras which proved to be unfounded however both teams provided a good game of football for the watching spectators.
An early breakthrough came via Caloe who scored great instinct to poke the ball home from inside the six yard box after the Fleet keeper failed to deal with a corner. The Blues were trying to play their normal brand of football which wasn't quite working and it took a great reaction save from Maisie, who tipped a fierce shot onto the post, to keep Fleet from drawing level.
Just before half time Keeley doubled the lead with a run and finish which showed great maturity. H/T Blues 2 Fleet 0 The halftime team talk from the Blues management team was of getting the next goal and the team duly delivered following a sublime piece of skill from Caloe, who trapped a high ball dead at her feet before using her pace and power to burst clear and get her second of the game. It was 4-0 shortly after when Sophie fired home after a corner wasn't cleared properly and a trademark long range effort from Ellie made it 5-0.
Fleet did pull one back late on but the game was over by then as the Blues saw the game out in a very professional manner.
Speaking after the game manager Joe Fazzino said "It wasn't our best performance of the season but I was pleased with the manner of the win. We've got girls who are committed, determined and brave and that counts for a lot in football. Our girls are fitter and stronger than any other team in the league but we won't be resting on that knowledge. There is now fierce competition for every place in the team. I'm expecting that the girls turn up to training on Friday ready to prove to me that they are deserving of a starting place against Staines on Sunday."
